DMBIUBIH is a partner in a new COST Action project dedicated to advancing pharmacogenomics (PGx) in cardiovascular medicine. This initiative addresses one of the most pressing gaps in European healthcare , the absence of harmonized and clinically actionable PGx guidelines for cardiovascular therapies.

Pharmacogenomics, which studies how genetic variation influences drug response, is essential for tailoring safe and effective treatments. In cardiovascular care, it plays a crucial role in therapies such as anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), antiplatelet agents (e.g., clopidogrel), statins, and antihypertensives. Despite strong evidence and international examples, clinical implementation across Europe remains fragmented and inconsistent.

The COST Action will:

  • map the current landscape of pharmacogenomics use in cardiovascular care across Europe,

  • develop and optimize EU-wide guidelines for clinically actionable genetic variants,

  • explore the use of AI and machine learning to improve dosing algorithms and predictive models,

  • address ethical and regulatory challenges related to data protection and patient privacy,

  • and create structured opportunities for training and knowledge transfer to young researchers, clinicians, and policymakers.

Through networking activities such as training schools, short-term scientific missions, stakeholder consultations, and international conferences, the project will strengthen collaboration among scientists, healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical companies, patient groups, and decision-makers.

The expected impact includes better patient outcomes through reduced adverse drug reactions, improved therapy effectiveness, lower healthcare costs, and enhanced patient trust in personalized medicine. In the long term, this Action will contribute to creating a Pan-European framework for pharmacogenomics in cardiovascular medicine, positioning Europe as a global leader in precision healthcare.
